For Labor Day we took a picnic and a short 2 mile hike in Hoyt Arboretum. It was a beautiful day. No rain and it started out cool.
Here we are in the Giant Sequoia grove. These are very young Sequoias, so they are not quite as big as the ones you can see in much older groves.
This tree was growing on the side of a steep hill. The exposed root structure is quite striking.
Hey Summer. This small group of trees is called the House of Summer.
Hoyt Arboretum is a beautiful place to visit on a nice day. Right next door to the Portland Zoo. It's a place every Portland visitor and resident must see. The park is huge. There's a 4 mile hike that will take you through just about everything there is to see. Or you can take a smaller 3 or even 2 mile hike and see most of it. My favorite part is of course the Sequoias, even if they're "small."
Hey, it is even Summer Size! It looks like a really nice place to visit. Maybe, when we get to come up for a visit...
ReplyDeleteI have been enjoying looking and re-looking at these pictures for several days now...where were you when you took the picture of the root structure? Looks like a great family outing.
ReplyDeleteThat tree with all the roots is also in Hoyt Arboretum. The have various "zones" of different types of trees. One minute you'll be walking through a Sequoia grove, the next bamboo, then a bunch of oak trees. It's a fun variety.
ReplyDeleteWe went again the following Saturday. They have a Japanese garden too that I wanted to hike to. Unfortunately there's an admission price for the Japanese garden and I wasn't really feeling like I wanted to see it that much. So we hiked on and got lost. Actually, we weren't totally lost. Just off the map and not getting to where I thought we were going. Eventually we made it back to familiar territory but had to cut the hike short since our detour made the hike longer than I planned.
This time the sky was even more clear than the last and we could see Mount St. Helens from the overview. I got picture...I'll post later.
